Nice short jaunt along the river today. There are so many odd things in this area if you just slow down to look at them, like a random circle of stones and a tiny Noah’s Ark. WTF?

Today begins the Derby Festival, kicked off by Thunder Over Louisville, touted as one of the biggest public fireworks display in the United States. Most any bike ride I take requires me to pedal through a particular path along the river that is closed to vehicles of all kinds, including the two wheeled human powered kind. No bikes allowed period, I can’t even walk my bike through.
So I went on a ride yesterday and watched the city workers put up chain link fences to control the crowd of thousands that will flock to either side of the mighty Ohio River, in Kentucky and Indiana, for the festivities.
In keeping with current events wrenching at the heart of most compassionate people, I wore my Bike Safe Boston t-shirt for the ride.
Another cyclist, using the marked share lane on a four lane bridge with a 25 to 35 MPH speed limit, was struck by a vehicle on the Clark Memorial Bridge today in the middle of the day.

No word on if the driver was arrested/ticketed, but the cyclist will be okay.
I always ride on the sidewalk on this bridge but it’s ridiculously difficult given the walking/runner/baby stroller traffic on the narrow sidewalks. It’s safer for everyone else for cyclists to use the marked bike lane…. but a lot of us don’t because of how often cyclist are hit by drivers speeding (when I’m driving I’m often passed by people doing at least 50 if not 60 when the signs are clearly marked 35 and sometimes 25 when work is being done on the bridge).
The bridge is a mile long and links Louisville Kentucky with Southern Indiana. There are two lanes going in each direction and a narrow sidewalk on either side. There is a bike lane going both ways that is actually a “Shared lane” with white markers.
Well, that’s f*cking cool. Obviously a for real fan of the band, check out that coffee table!
